On October 2, 2009, Rio De Janeiro gained the right to host the 2016 Summer Olympic games. The logo which was designed to represent the candidate city and which afterwards became symbol of the 2016 Summer Olympic games, is a stylized replica of Sugar Loaf – a prominent local heart-shaped landmark. Ann Soter, the winning designer, explains that the mountain in the shape of a heart represents the Brazilians' indisputable passion and desire to sport. The exclamation mark replacing the numeral 1 in the writing 'Rio 20!6' symbolizes Brazil's heightened expectations to win the opportunity to hold the event.
The distinctive shape of the Sugar Loaf is representative of the city's natural assets with which cariocas, Rio De Janeiro local citizens are so proud of. The proposed logo is intended to embody the varied colors of Rio's exuberant nature. You can see from the picture of Rio below how the logo ties in with the landscape. The colors that are use in the logo design are the same as those of the Brazilian flag – yellow, green and blue. The logo was chosen from among 4 finalists.
