The heart of Rio in 2016 Summer Olympic games logo

On October 2, 2009, Rio De Janeiro gained the right to host the 2016 Summer Olympic games. The logo which was designed to represent the candidate city and which afterwards became symbol of the 2016 Summer Olympic games, is a stylized replica of Sugar Loaf – a prominent local heart-shaped landmark. Ann Soter, the winning designer, explains that the mountain in the shape of a heart represents the Brazilians' indisputable passion and desire to sport. The exclamation mark replacing the numeral 1 in the writing 'Rio 20!6' symbolizes Brazil's heightened expectations to win the opportunity to hold the event.
